How to dress your windows like a professional

We’ve all seen those interior design shows on TV, where a horde of people descend on a house that needs a makeover and turn it into an amazing space within a few short hours. If only life were that simple! Unless we’re really obsessive about cleaning, tidying, and keeping up with trends, our homes have a habit of quickly looking a little worse for wear. If you’d like to give your home a lift without spending too much time doing it, a great way to achieve a fresh new look is by dressing your windows properly.

Windows don’t usually take centre stage when it comes to redecorating, that’s because most of us are focused on what paint colours to go for, and what wallpaper to choose. But try focusing on your windows and you can quickly create a really professional looking home just by using simple tricks like eyelet curtains ready made to save you time.

Cheat with ready made eyelet curtains

Eyelet curtains that are ready made can give your windows a super-modern look. With their smart chrome-look eyelets at the top they can help frame a window perfectly. And because those eyelets are all placed at equal distances apart, your curtains will hang just how they should – with equal gathers all the way across. As anyone who’s ever attempted to make curtains will know, making sure you get them absolutely perfect can take a lifetime! With eyelet curtains that are ready made all the hard work is done for you.

Think about colour

In terms of the colour of your curtains, you don’t always need to stick to the same shades as you have in the rest of your room. Take inspiration from designers and opt for bold colour clashes. For instance, you may think orange would never go with blue but the pair really complement each other. If your taste is less bold, then go for curtains that are in the same tone as the rest of the room you’re decorating. So, while you may have your walls painted in a duck egg blue, try teaming curtains in a dove grey or putty colour to set the look off. Sticking to one colour all the way round your room can end in a very blank canvas so do as the professionals do and add lift and interest by dressing your windows in colours that are different from the rest of your room.

Add depth

Get creative with your window dressing and add a double layer of fabric. Hang soft muslin curtains directly in front of the window, then frame with thicker curtains. Go for block colours or add depth and interest with a bold pattern, or go shabby chic with a ditsy floral print.

The finishing touches

The one thing that pros do that we have a habit of skimping on, is finishing everything off properly. Pick finials for your curtain poles, tie backs for the curtains, and give your windows a good clean to set off all your hard work nicely. You’ll have gorgeous looking windows in no time…
