The Best Curtains for Kids’ Bedrooms

Ah kids, you’ve gotta love ‘em, right? Those tiny creatures that take over your life from the moment they appear and get whipped away to be weighed. They change your world in an instant and suddenly all you want to do is give them everything. Sadly ‘everything’ can cost quite a lot. Which is a shame, especially when you’re trying to be the best parents ever invented. If you’re doing up your kid’s bedroom and you’re trying to source some seriously epic (it’s kid speak for cool) curtains, here are some great ideas to try…

Toddlers
•Dinosaurs
•Diggers
•Pigs
•Ballerinas

The list of things toddlers fall instantly obsessed with is seemingly endless, and it can be a hard task keeping up to date with it all. One thing’s for sure though, colourful curtains are destined to look right at home in a kid’s bedroom. Whether you just go for plain, block coloured long curtains from a UK store, or you go all out with crazy patterns, you can have great fun making them right for your own little monkey. You could –

•Applique your child’s favourite animal on to plain curtains
•Stencil stars and moons on blackout curtains to add interest
•Buy ready-made long curtains in UK and add felt shapes to personalize them

Tweens

Footballs, fairies, princesses, and monsters all have a place in most tween’s hearts. So look out for curtains that feature these colourful characters on them (though monsters should obviously be happy and friendly-looking monsters!) If you fancy a little craft project, you could always add little pockets to your child’s curtains. These little pockets would make the perfect place to store special treasures and secret notes – and may come in handy when the tooth fairy comes to visit too.

Teenagers

Pleasing a teenager is pretty nigh impossible – unless you’ve got one of those rare teenagers who is actually – unbelievably – happy. As a golden rule, a teenager’s bedroom is their own and they’ll want to decorate it in their own unique style. Whether that’s a style that features midnight black walls with matching long curtains, or the total opposite where piles of teddies obstruct the majority of the bed, it will probably change from one month to the next. The best route to go down, therefore, is one that has simplicity at its core. Keep things simple and they’ll stay looking good for longer. You can add personality to simple curtains by pinning badges to them, adding funky designs like lightning bolt felt shapes – and you could get your teenager involved with crafting too.

Kids deserve funky bedrooms, and taking time to make them special is rewarding for you and for your kid. Take ideas from all your child’s favourite toys and places to visit, and transfer these ideas to their bedroom. Once you get started, you’ll soon find it hard to stop!

How to Winter Proof Your Home using Soft Furnishings

If you’re worried about the rising cost of fuel, the effects of all this central heating on the planet, or you just want to make your home as cosy and comfortable as possible, it’s time to think about soft furnishings.

For many, soft furnishings are just about making your home look great. But if you’re clever, they can be a secret weapon against winter chills, and can mean the difference between a freezing house and a cosy one. Soft furnishings such as cushions, blankets, and extra wide ready made curtains or blinds can all help beat the winter blues.

Step inside a room that’s been properly dressed with plenty of soft furnishings, and then step into an empty room with nothing in, and you’ll immediately notice the difference. So here’s what to focus on to cut out the chill…

Cushions and draft excluders

Help minimise drafts by sewing your own chunky floor cushions or making draft excluders to place behind your door. If you’ve got drafty old windows, you could even use miniature draft excluders here, or window seat pads can help block out drafts too. What’s more, a sofa laden with gorgeous fluffy cushions can quickly become a place to hibernate in the colder months – especially if you’ve got a log fire on the go too. Think of cushions as extra protection against the winter months and you’ll soon be en route to a warmer home.

Curtains and blinds

Tackle drafts and cold windows by dressing them properly. Extra wide Ready made Curtains UK are a great idea if you’ve got big old windows and need a quick fix. What’s more, because they’ve got all that added width, they’re really built to keep drafts at bay. Pair your extra wide ready made curtains with a blind or a panel curtain that hangs right in front of the window, and you’ve got double protection against the chilly winter air.

Curtains aren’t just for windows though. Even if you can’t afford to freeze-proof your entire house, why not just focus on one room? Add extra wide ready made curtains to doorways, or if your house is open plan, use them to section off areas. By doing this, even though the rest of your house may not be super-warm, at least you’ll have one room that’s a whole lot cosier than it was before.

Blankets and wall hangings

Whether you use your blankets to snuggle in to keep the cold at bay, or use them as the perfect finishing touch to a chair or sofa, they can all help to warm up your room. Why not try getting a bit creative and pinning pretty blankets or fabric wall hangings to your walls? Adding extra fabric to a room can help take the edge off and it won’t break the bank either.

So don’t just think of soft furnishings as a pretty face. While they may be nice to look at, they’ve got another more useful side to them too – helping to keep Jack Frost outside where he belongs.

Top Tips on Fitting your Curtains

Buying curtains may initially seem like a straightforward thing to do but making sure you get the right measurements for your curtains can be trickier than you think.

Curtains are a mixed bunch and come in all sorts of styles and designs. From Extra long and wide curtains to curtains that are super-small, here’s how to make sure you get the perfect fit for your windows.

Pole v Track

It’s the age-old question – pole or track? The curtain pole is solid, sturdy, and available in wood, metal, and even plastic. It can be painted, or left bare. Curtain poles are more expensive than track but they look great in both period and modern properties, and they’ll last for years to come.

If you opt for a curtain pole, you’ll need to measure the drop of your curtains from the small hooks that hang on the underside of the curtain pole rings (this is where you’ll be attaching your curtains). From this point, measure all the way down to the point you want your curtains to hang. If you’re choosing floor length curtains, measure up to 1cm above the floor. Window sill length curtains should be measured to 1cm above the sill, and below the sill length curtains should just be measured to your desired length.

Curtain track on the other hand is incredibly minimalist in style, and when your curtains are pulled, you won’t even notice it’s there. Track is great for hanging lightweight curtains but might not work so well on extra long and wide curtains – especially if they’re heavy.

Measure your curtains from the top of the track (so that you won’t see any of your track when your curtains are hung). You then need to follow the same rules as above (1cm above window sill and floor, or to your desired point).

Choose your Style

Curtains come in three classic styles – tab top and eyelet (to be used on curtain poles) and pencil pleat (which can be used on curtain poles and track). Eyelet and tab top curtains are the most modern look and are quick and simple to hang. Pencil pleat curtains, however, offer you more flexibility as to how gathered and full you want your curtain to be – and that’s all thanks to the curtain tape you’ll find at the top.

Full or Flat

When measuring for curtains you need to take into consideration how full you want your curtains to be. A standard guide is to take the measurement of your window and then either double it (for nice full curtains) or add half of the measurement (for curtains that won’t look so full).

When you’re measuring for your curtains, always try and do the following to ensure good results –

•Use a meter rule for accuracy

•Make sure you’re measuring straight

•Ensure your curtain poles and track are bigger than your windows by at least 15cm on either side to allow for the curtain to hang neatly without obscuring the window
